Michael L. Hansen
Senior Economist, RAND Corporation
Michael L. Hansen is a senior economist at the RAND Corporation where he currently serves as associate director of RAND Arroyo Center. He previously served as that division’s research quality assurance manager, as director of its Personnel, Training, and Health program, and as associate director of its Manpower and Training program. Hansen has conducted research on military manpower and personnel issues for over 20 years. Recent projects include an assessment of the U.S. Army’s enlistment waiver policies, an analysis of personnel tempo on U.S. Coast Guard major cutters, and an evaluation of the Corporation for the Promotion of Rifle Practice and Firearms Safety.
Before joining RAND, Hansen worked as a research analyst and project director at CNA. During that time, he served as field scientist at the Kentucky Department of Education and scientific analyst to the U.S. Navy’s Director, Military Personnel Plans and Policy Division (N13), and to the Assistant Secretary of the Navy, Manpower and Reserve Affairs. He was also a member of the principal research staff of the Ninth and Tenth Quadrennial Reviews of Military Compensation. Hansen received his Ph.D. in economics from Boston College.
